Opening doors to NextGEN Careers involved three students from the Science in the Community Community Engaged Learning (CEL) program at Western University, Amber Patten, Brooke Meloche and Kristin Goodger working with the STEAM Centre and 3M industry partner Helen Karahalios to help raise awareness of Canada's STEM crisis. The goal was to build awareness to encourage high school students to take senior level math and science credits in order to prepare them for the jobs of the future by dispelling misconceptions about STEM courses versus career outcomes. The jobs of the future will be in STEAM careers, many of which that haven't been invented and yet less than 50% of students are taking a senior level credit. A social media campaign was created highlighting STEAM artists, Misconception Mondays and outside STEAM learning resources. Read their full report below.
