Rubber Band Racecar

Vroom, vroom...Make your own moving car! All cars use wheels and axles, but our car is special because it also contains a pull-back mechanism to shoot it forward! In this field trip we will look at mechanisms and movement. Mechanisms make things move using simple machines. These mechanisms include levers, inclined planes, pulleys, screws, and wheels and axles! A mechanical engineer or a mechanic gets to build and fix simple machines all day. See what it would be like to work in their world.

Grades 2-4

Curriculum Expectations:

Grade 2: Science and Technology
  • A1. STEM Investigation and Communication Skills
use a scientific research process, a scientific experimentation process, and an engineering design process to conduct investigations, following appropriate health and safety procedures
  • D1. Relating Science and Technology to Our Changing World
assess the impact of simple machines on society and on the environment
  • D2. Exploring and Understanding Conceptsdemonstrate an understanding of movement and ways in which simple machines help to move objects
Grade 3: Science and Technology
  • A1. STEM Investigation and Communication Skills
use a scientific research process, a scientific experimentation process, and an engineering design process to conduct investigations, following appropriate health and safety procedures
  • C2. Exploring and Understanding Concepts
demonstrate an understanding of how forces cause motion and changes in motion
  • D2. Exploring and Understanding Concepts
demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of strength and stability as they relate to structures with various forms and functions, and of the factors that affect structures’ strength and stability

Grade 4:  Science and Technology
  • A1. STEM Investigation and Communication Skills
